Jesus, Layaway in Reverse

Tis the season of preparing for the academic year. Having grown up in Chicago (shout out South Side), we began school, traditionally, the Wednesday after Labor Day. Accordingly, we began in June or early July engaging in the ritual of school shopping. Rarely did my mother have the funds to purchase my school clothes on the spot, instead she utilized the process of layaway. The process required a small payment to “hold” the items, and payment over time. It was so exiting and gratifying to secure the clothes upon final payment. Although layaway isn’t as readily available as years past, there is an updated, more contemporary option available, which still allows to “buy now, pay later,” but with a twist. One can actually have the goods immediately with a small payment, and then subsequently, payments over time. This could be considered even better, because there is instant gratification as opposed to delayed gratification. That’s what prompted me to consider that Jesus is like layaway in reverse!

We don’t have to wait to an appointed time to receive Him or His benefits. We don’t have to return to the store each time we have an extra five or ten or twenty dollars, and pay on something we cannot have until we’ve met our obligation. When Jesus gave His life at Calvary, the debt was paid for any and everyone! And the residue, the Blood has the ability to rest upon all that we ask or think and make it right! Further, we don’t have to worry about someone else getting the Hello Kitty backpack or Smurf lunchbox before us and the store running out, because grace and mercy is ever available and even abundant.

Jesus as layaway in reverse means that we have access to whatever we need to be victorious in whatever we attempt. When we accept Jesus into our lives, we never have to worry about layaway again. Whatever we stand in need of, we can have – peace, healing, joy, comfort, love – the layaway in reverse has it covered. Numbers 23:20 affirms, “I have received a command to bless; he has blessed, and I cannot change it.” I see no lies in this. All the best for the new academic year. Let’s pray that each of us show up daily wearing the fruit of our layaway in reverse, available at all times, for such a time as this.
