Yes, the utterance of the words, “If Only You Knew,” catapults me back to the south side of Chicago, on Brianna Walker’s back porch, when lightning bugs filled the night sky to the swooning of all of us, the girls that is, singing with Ms. Patti. We had no idea as to what she was referring to, but you couldn’t tell us nothing! We had the song down from the opening moan to the closing, “I love you and I’m so fond of you” note.
As I got older, I realized that Ms. Patti was singing about someone who had no idea, no clue about how she felt. She was harboring a love for someone who was not attuned to her deepest emotions. In fact, she actually assumed that the person didn’t care at all about her or what she was experiencing. Its not 1983, and I’m not referring to the romantic love that we have (or will have) for someone else. However, in the midst of trouble, it certainly can feel like God is far, far away. Zephaniah 3:17 assures us that “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” Loud singing? Ha! Sounds like Patti, Patti!
If only we knew that the joy of the Lord is our strength when we are burdened down. If only we knew that God’s love for us is not minimized when we feel overwhelmed. If only we knew that we are most victorious when we see defeat. If only we knew the power of life is within our grasp through the very words we utter. If only we knew that our salvation was so critical that a sacrifice was enacted on our behalf at no cost to us! If only we knew that the enemy doesn’t have what we believe he has! If only we knew that the Lord is closest to us when we believe he is farthest away.
Have you ever been guilty of thinking, “If only he (God) knew what I’m feeling?” Be encouraged my sister, my brother, because He does! Isaiah 40:28 declares: “Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding.” He desires for us to know Him, and if we know Him, we can, through faith know that we are likened to the apple of his eye – we are, despite what it looks like or feels like, treasured. Accordingly, meanwhile God, the Most High God is sitting on throne thinking, “If only you knew!”
I’ve been worshipping to, “Worth Fighting For” by Brian Courtney Wilson. The song has ministered to me all week long. Eyes haven’t seen, ears haven’t heard, all He has planned for me! Yet, there is a caveat. We must endure. We must stay the course. We must remain. We can remain because Jesus already won! The fight was fixed at Calvary! We’re just going through the motions. The enemy will trick us to believe that there is actually a reason to get exhausted, and keep running around the ring; but truth be told, he knows that the fight is fixed as well. Sing, II Chronicles 20:17,”You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.” Walk with God! In the eighth month of the year, we’ve been granted a new beginning. What might God do next?! If only you knew! Now go head on and kick your shoes off like Ms. Patti and give God a praise!
